Pirates Acquire RHP Daulton Jefferies From Giants

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for minor-league outfielder Rodolfo Nolasco. Jefferies, 28, had been designated for assignment by San Francisco on May 10.

Jefferies missed the 2023 season after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery but returned to the mound this year.

The right-hander made a pair of appearances with the Giants this season and went 0-2 with a 17.36 ERA. In 4.2 innings, Jefferies allowed 13 runs, nine of which were earned, on 14 hits, a pair of walks and four strikeouts. In Triple-A this year, he posted a 3.44 ERA across four appearances.

Jefferies pitched parts of three seasons with the Oakland A’s from 2020-22 where he combined to go 2-8 with a 5.74 ERA in 14 appearances/10 starts. He was drafted by the A’s with the  37th pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of California, Berkley.

Nolasco, meanwhile has played five seasons in the minor leagues of the Pirates’ organization and reached High-A Greensboro for the first time this season.

The 21-year-old appeared in 21 games with the Grasshoppers on the year, where he hit .173 with a .558 OPS, three doubles, two home runs and 12 RBIs.

For his career, Nolasco has slashed .244/.351/.446 with 60 doubles, 46 home runs and 198 RBIs in 296 career games. He peaked as high as the Pirates’ 25th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline in 2020. The Pirates signed him out of the Dominican Republic for $235,000 during the 2018-19 signing period.
